The short answer: the International Coaching Federation’s 2025 study puts the average fee for a one-hour coaching session at $234 worldwide. Coaches who mainly work with executives charge more: $360 an hour on average in ICF’s 2023 study, against $240 for coaches who mainly work with business owners.
Executive coaching usually runs for months, not sessions, so judge it on the total and on what changes.
What coaches charge per hour
| Source | What it measured | Figure |
|---|---|---|
| ICF Global Coaching Study, 2025 | Average fee for a one-hour session, all coaching, worldwide | $234 |
| ICF Global Coaching Study, 2023 (2022 data) | Average fee, coaches in North America | $272 |
| ICF, 2023 | Median fee worldwide: half of coaches charge less | $180 |
| ICF, 2023 | Coaches whose clients are mostly executives | $360 |
| ICF, 2023 | Coaches whose clients are mostly business owners | $240 |
| Harvard Business Review, 2009 | Median fee among 140 executive coaches | $500 |
The Harvard Business Review survey is old and skewed to the top of the market: its coaches charged anywhere from $200 to $3,500 an hour, with most between $500 and $725. ICF’s figures are newer and much broader, covering more than 10,000 respondents in 127 countries in 2025, but they include every kind of coaching, not just executive work.
What drives the price
- Who the client is. In ICF’s 2023 study, coaches who mainly work with executives averaged $360 an hour, against $150 for coaches who mainly work with private individuals.
- Experience. Average fees rose from $150 an hour for coaches in their first year to $310 for those with more than ten years’ experience.
- Who pays. Coaches whose clients are almost all paid for by an employer averaged $290 an hour, against $180 for coaches with no sponsored clients.
- Format. Session length, how often you meet, and extras such as assessments or feedback interviews with colleagues all add to the total.
What a full engagement costs
Executive coaching is sold as an engagement rather than by the session. In the Harvard Business Review survey, nearly all coaches set a fixed duration, most often seven to twelve months.
To turn hourly rates into a budget, multiply. Two one-hour sessions a month for six months is twelve sessions: about $4,300 at ICF’s $360 average for coaches of executives, or $6,000 at the $500 median in the HBR survey. Assessments, preparation time and contact between sessions can add to that, so ask what’s included.
Business coaching for small business owners
Owners of small businesses often pay less per hour than corporate executives. ICF’s 2023 study put the average at $240 an hour for coaches who mainly work with business owners and entrepreneurs. Many business coaches charge a monthly retainer instead of an hourly rate, which makes the cost predictable and keeps the coach available between sessions.
Is it worth it?
Only if something changes: a decision gets made, a habit sticks, the business gets past a plateau. Coaching that doesn’t change anything is an expensive conversation. Before you start, write down what you want to be different in six months, and check it at three.
How to keep the cost honest
- Agree the goals in writing before the first session.
- Set a length, with a review point halfway through.
- Ask what’s included: sessions, contact in between, assessments, preparation.
- Ask how progress will be judged, and by whom.
That’s how we run business coaching: on a retainer or by the hour, with a coach matched to what you need from our team and network. When there’s a number to move as well, clients often pair coaching with paid-on-results consulting.
